Una estadía en Berlín, hace poco más de un año, inaugura la etapa actual de su trabajo. Jacinta experimenta de una manera más radical el descalce respecto a su contexto de origen.

En Berlín la artista empezó a ir a mercados de las pulgas y antigüedades que están en distintos distritos de la ciudad y ahí recolectó objetos y visualidades que responden el imaginario y al estilo de vida de la burguesía tradicional europea. Un imaginario que, en su deriva post colonial, sigue contagiando los valores de las burguesías tercermundistas.

En este proceso de reelaboración crítica de su identidad, la artista acoge este imaginario vinculándolo a recuerdos familiares. Los objetos e imágenes de las ferias de antigüedades, las delicadas figuritas de loza que celebran las costumbres cortesanas del siglo XVIII, las tacitas, las frágiles copas, las teteras finamente ornamentadas le resuenan, como un eco, a una acumulación que ya había visto en la casa de sus abuelos, aficionados a coleccionar todo tipo de fetiches.

La plasticina ha sido siempre su material. La obra surge de un diálogo entre el material y las ideas. Un material tradicionalmente asociado a las manualidades, a lo infantil, precario y desechable. Una sustancia conectada a su propia memoria. Pero también un material moldeable, flexible, dócil a la mano. El proceso es lento y prolijo, corre a contrapelo del resultado inmediato, de la instantaneidad y de la ansiedad contemporáneas.

A stint in Berlin, just over a year ago, marks the beginning of the current phase of her work. There, Jacinta experienced in a more profound manner the contrary context of her origins.

In Berlin, the artist began attending flea and antique markets in different districts of the city and collected objects and visual elements that reflect the collective imagination and lifestyle of the traditional European bourgeoisie. An imagination that, since its post-colonial beginnings, continues to influence the values of the bourgeoisies of the Third World.

In this process of critical re-elaboration of her identity, the artist welcomes this collective imagination linking it to familiar memories. The objects and images from these antique fairs, the delicate earthenware figurines that celebrate 18th century courtly customs, the little tea cups, the fragile glasses, the finely decorated teapots resonate, like an echo, with a collection that she has been accustomed to seeing in the home of her grandparents, who fondly collect all kinds of trinkets.

Plasticine has always been her material of choice. Her work arises from a dialogue between the material and her ideas. A material traditionally associated with crafts, children, the precarious and the disposable. A substance connected to its own memory. But, also, a malleable, flexible, docile material in one’s hands. The process is slow and meticulous, a far cry from immediate results, contemporary instantaneity and anxiety.
